Here are the final results from the 19th Annual Alympics held Saturday, June 18th.  The audit team (consisting of Marit and myself) have signed off on the results after a thorough review of the scoresheets and nearly 700 worksheet cells.  Please note that the final order of finish has moved around somewhat – beginning with Team Jackson moving up from 6th to 3rd place due to a hockey score correction.

Congratulations to this year’s champions, Kyle MacDonald and Kevin Shea.  Kyle is my 2ndnephew to win, following in the footsteps of his brother Patrick who came into this Alympics as the 2-time defending champion.  Patrick has now discovered just how difficult it is to 3-peat (in fact I haven’t even done it!).  With a string of 3 MacDonald championships under their belt, their father John (still winless at Alympics) was heard to remark “I just breed champions”.  Kyle has continued to climb the ladder after turning in finishes of 8th, 7th, 3rd, and now 1st in the last 4 years.  Kevin has now matched me with 4 titles which probably is more a reflection of his ability to draw numbers out of a hat as he has partnered with Patrick and Kyle - both collegiate football players - in 2 of the last 3 years.  However, give the Irishman his due:  with this win Kevin has extended his record of top-3 finishes to 9 or almost half of the Alympics he has competed in, and he is only one short of Shannon McCaig’s all-time record for top-5’s (10).  Kyle and Kevin will have the honor of hosting of the Champions Dinner next year where the bar has been set fairly high (a big thanks to defending champion Scott Sager for picking up the tab at Bob’s Steak & Chop House this year).

2nd place in the 2011 Alympics goes to the team of Reed Ripley and Joe Longoria.  These are two of the most consistently strong performers at Alympics so it was no surprise when they drew each other and ended up being strong contenders for the title.  The OSU-bound Reed now has 4 top-5 finishes in the last 5 years proving that there are more benefits to living under my roof than college advisement.  Of course I should point out that 3 of his top-5’s were with me as his partner.  Joe has now finished in the runner-up position 2 years in a row and is literally hammering the door down in search of his first title as he has now compiled an amazing streak of 5 straight top-5 finishes, beating Shannon’s previous record of 4 straight.

While the top 2 teams were the undisputed frontrunners most of the day, the race for 3rd place was extremely tight (for some reason, as it is every year).  This year the 3-4-5 spots were separated by only 6 points.  3rd place in the 2011 Alympics goes to Dave & Miles Jackson who also claimed their first father-son championship in two tries (moving up 9 big spots from last year’s 12th place finish).  Dave has been competing since 1994 and it’s only fitting that he finally gets on the plaque alongside his soon-to-be Baylor Bear son.  Finishing only 3 points back in 4th place were me and my partner David Martin (highest finish for a rookie in 3 years).  I could go back and find out how many top-5’s I have but I only count championships J  Another 3 points back in 5th place with yet another strong showing were Tim and Matt Gilroy.  This was Team Gilroy’s 7th consecutive top-7 finish including father-son titles in ’04 and ’10.  Matt needs to step it up; we know Tim’s not getting any younger!

Top 10 Finishers:
1st Place:  Kyle MacDonald & Kevin Shea 493 pts.
2nd Place:  Reed Ripley & Joe Longoria 453 pts.
3rd Place:  Dave & Miles Jackson  418 pts. (Father-Son Champions)
4th Place:  Al Ripley & David Martin 415 pts.
5th Place:  Tim & Matt Gilroy  412 pts.
6th Place:  Dave Brauer & Eddie Colvin  398 pts.
7th Place:  Patrick MacDonald & Brian Halloran  374 pts.
8th Place:  Charles & Brooks Chevaillier 363 pts.
9th Place:  Colin Carnes & Gary Hohweiler 361 pts.
10th Place:  Randy Rorick & Doug Tapp  355 pts.

The Senior Division Champion (individual award given to highest senior finisher) went to Kevin Shea in his 1st appearance as a senior.  It was a convincing win as Kevin finished 75 pts. ahead of the 2nd place finisher Dave Jackson.

There so many “Thank You’s” to go around, and I’m sure I’m going to miss a few…but let me start with our “sponsors” Rob Gallant (Office Max) for the clipboards, markers and signage and Marc Fore (No-Ad & Ocean Potion) for all of the various sun-protection products.

Thanks once again our awesome neighbors:
Geoff & Ann Pertzborn (Ping Pong, Volleyball and for providing their pool for the kids and their garage for the band)
Rob & Kelly Gallant (HR Derby)

A BIG thanks to our scorers:
Ro Otto (Darts)
Debbie MacDonald (Basketball)
Katie Dachniwsky (Football)
Mandy Woodrow (Hockey)
Marit Ripley (Pop-a-Shot)
Rachel Timmons (Putt-Putt)
Fran MacDonald & Katie Tipley (Home Run Derby and Golf)
Chelsea Currence (Croquet)

Another huge thanks to our big board/spreadsheet scoring support team -- Ro and Kelli Otto – great family effort!!!

Thanks also to Marc Fore and Gary Timmons for cooking the burgers and hot dogs (which was a VERY hot job this year) and for all of the pot-luck dishes everyone brought.

And another great job by Kerri Tapp for her amazing singing on stage with The Tonemasters!

And of course, most of all – thanks to the General Manager, Melissa – the one that really makes Alympics what it is.

Command Performances:
  1. Darts – Patrick MacDonald/Brian Halloran (17), Steve Howen/Donnie Otto (21), Dave & Miles Jackson (21) – 5th and 13th all-time.  Helps to have a 7’ wingspan.  Also doesn’t hurt having your Mom score the event.
  2. Pop-a-Shot – Patrick MacDonald (117), Kyle MacDonald (109), Reed Ripley (108), Gary Hohweiler (103) – 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 6th all-time.  Again, helps to have a 7’ wingspan.  These 4 gentlemen have combined for 15 of the top 18 all-time.
  3. Poker – Kyle MacDonald (74), Charles Chevaillier (63) – 4th and 13th all-time.   Kyle turns 21 on 3/16/12 – look out Vegas!  As for Charles, just one of countless poker games he has won at my house.
  4. HR Derby – Reed Ripley (31), Kevin Shea (31), Blair Baxter (28), Josh Hohweiler (27), Tyler Dickey (27) – 4th, 10th, and 12th all-time.  Reed now has his 5th top ten record.  The wind must have been blowing out when Kevin stepped to the plate.
  5. Hockey – Charles Chevaillier (51), Brooks Chevaillier (46), Levi Gallant (43) – 6th, 11th, and 14th all-time.  Needless to say, Team Chevaillier lapped the field in this event.  But not surprising since Charles grew up in that hotbed of hockey (Arkansas).  This is 12-year-old Levi’s first record; likely more in his future.
  6. Putt-Putt – Kevin Shea (70), Kyle MacDonald (59), Brian Wooters (59), Tim Gilroy (59) – 1st and 12th all-time.  Usually this event is a good barometer for the best golfers.  Not sure what happened this year…
  7. Football – Braden Kennedy (47) – 11th all-time.  A&M better get ready for a new 12th man at quarterback.
  8. Croquet – Shawn Barker (21) – 10th all-time.  Is there not enough to do in Bartlesville these days?

No records were set this year in Basketball (either too windy or Kevin, Tim & I are all past our prime) or Golf (unless you include Josh’s back-to-back shots that landed in Melissa’s pots).

See you all next year...

Al Ripley
